Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to commonly asked questions below.

What should I expect during my first acupuncture session?
Your initial appointment includes both a consultation and treatment and is approximately 90 minutes. •         Please have something to eat before your session •         Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing •         You may be asked to complete new client forms if not already submitted online •         A thorough assessment will be conducted, including discussion of your health history and a Traditional Chinese Medicine evaluation •         Your treatment plan will be explained, followed by your initial acupuncture treatment •         Subsequent appointments are approximately 45 minutes.
Why do you recommend pre-booking of follow-up appointments?
During the initial assessment, a treatment plan will be developed based on the nature and severity of your condition.   Acupuncture is most effective when administered consistently.  Initial regular sessions build upon each other, creating a cumulative and more impactful effect.  Pre-booking appointments is not mandatory, however, because time slots fill quickly, pre-booking ensures that you secure your preferred appointment times and maintain the continuity of your treatment plan.  Your treatment plan will be regularly reviewed and adjusted as necessary based on your progress and needs.  If at any point you feel that further treatment sessions are unnecessary, pre-booked appointments may be cancelled with 24 hours notice.
Is it painful when acupuncture needles are inserted?
While the experience may vary between individuals, acupuncture is generally not painful and is described as relaxing. Most patients report little to no discomfort. Needles are usually inserted only 1/8” to 1/4” deep. The insertion may feel like a tiny prick or tingling sensation. You may also notice a heavy or dull sensation around the needle site. If you experience any pain, let the acupuncturist know right away so the needle can be adjusted or removed as needed.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes—when performed by a trained practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. At our clinic, we follow strict hygiene and safety protocols at every step of your treatment. The practitioner will thoroughly sanitize their hands before beginning care and again immediately prior to needle insertion. Areas of your skin where a needle will be placed is cleansed with alcohol beforehand. We use only sterile, single-use needles, which are safely disposed of after each treatment. The practitioner will sanitize their hands again before removing the needles to maintain a clean field throughout the process. Most people experience little to no discomfort, and side effects are typically minimal—occasionally mild soreness and/or slight bruising. If you have specific health concerns or questions, we’re always happy to discuss them with you before your treatment.
How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
Acupuncture is generally most effective when approached as a process rather than a one-time treatment. Most conditions respond best to a short course of care, with a common starting point of 6 to 8 treatments. We typically recommend weekly treatments for the first 4 to 5 weeks. This allows us to see how your body responds to treatment and whether symptoms begin to improve in a consistent way. Your feedback during this time is very important, as it helps guide adjustments to your care and helps us better address the root cause of your symptoms. We usually reassess your progress around the 5th visit. As improvement is maintained, treatments may then be spaced farther apart. The total number of treatments can vary depending on: The condition being treated, whether it’s acute or chronic, the severity of your symptoms, and your overall health and constitution. After your initial assessment, we’ll outline a plan that gives you a clear sense of timing and expected costs, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
How can acupuncture help with stress and anxiety?
Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of stress and anxiety. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, it helps balance the body's energy, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being. Many of our clients experience significant relief from stress and anxiety symptoms, leading to better sleep and increased energy levels.
Is “dry needling / medical acupuncture” the same as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture?
The practices of “dry needling / medical acupuncture” and TCM acupuncture are very different as briefly described below: •         Dry Needling / Medical Acupuncture . Western medicine principle-based needling was first conducted by physicians in the early 1940’s. The origins of dry needling were drawn from western medicine principles and scientific, research-based conclusions.  Dry needling entails stimulating certain points on the body to release tension from knots and pressure points in muscles in order to relieve pain and/or to improve range of motion.  Certification programs for practitioners of dry needling typically consist of a three-day course covering concepts, application and safety guidelines.  The practice of dry needling is not regulated. •         Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture. The practice of TCM acupuncture dates back to at least 100 B.C. in China.  Acupuncture is used to restore the flow of a person's Qi (life energy) along meridians on the body.  TCM acupuncturists insert needles to release endorphins and affect the nervous system. TCM acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions. Strict guidelines are in place for TCM acupuncturists.  To practice TCM acupuncture, a person needs to be licensed and undergo extensive training.  A TCM acupuncturist will undergo 3 or more years of training.  They learn to identify symptoms, diagnose conditions and use correct techniques with needles. Before receiving a license, a new TCM practitioner must pass examinations from the provincial board and they must maintain a minimum level of continuous education each year after receiving a license.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your individual extended health benefit plan. Many insurance providers in Canada include acupuncture, but the amount of coverage and specific conditions vary. We do not direct bill insurance companies.  We provide a detailed receipt after each treatment, which is emailed to you.  You can then submit this receipt directly to your insurance provider for reimbursement according to your plan.
What is your policy regarding cancellations and missed appointments?
We understand that schedules can change, and we do our best to accommodate our patients. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for any appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Missed appointments or late cancellations will be billed for the full cost of the scheduled session. There is a waiting list for acupuncture treatments; adequate notice allows us to offer your appointment to another patient. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
